Subject: KDE 4.2

I installed KDE 4.2 a few hours ago, and want to give my first impressions.

Overall, this is a good release. Many of the KDE 3.5 features have found their way into 4.2, such as the task bar being able to show only entries for the current desktop, and grouping of task entries (something I dearly missed with 4.0 and 4.1).

The task bar looks much better than its 4.x predecessors. Task entries do not merge into one another, but instead are separated by a little blank space. This makes it much more pleasant to look at.

Strangely, though, the escape key no longer works within applications. This must be some type of setting, but I haven't yet figured out which one. So far, this is the only real defect I've found.

Update 2009-06-22

I found this out a long time ago, but never updated my posting. The escape key problem was caused by me defining multiple actions for that key. Once I got rid of the second definition, the escape key worked as expected.

It also seems as though NVIDIA has fixed the texturing problems that were discovered during the development of KDE 4. While not specifically a KDE issue, the problems had certainly contributed to the overall appearance of the KDE 4 desktop. Kudos to NVIDIA. Now if they'd only start releasing documentation for their cards, I wouldn't have to start shunning them when the Open Source AMD driver is ready (the one based on the torrent of documentation being released by AMD).
